Spinach Kids

Follow Skagit County teens who work in spinach fields, 'roguing' for rogue male spinach plants in the fields for spinach seed producers. The seed producers use two different breeds to make a hybrid spinach plant that is immune to disease and mildew. The kids work 5 hours per day, 5 days a week.

Keith Chaplin

My name is Keith Chaplin, I am a Senior Communication Major at Washington State University with an Emphasis in Journalism.

In the summer of 2008 I had an internship at my hometown newspaper, the Skagit Valley Herald.
The opportunities and freedom given to me at the Herald have excited me for the opportunity to work for a news organization in the near future.
I have found that I entered the Journalism field at a time of great stress and confusion; but also a time when the canvas for producing quality news is almost daunting. The ability to use different mediums (Audio/Visual/Writing/Combination of all) to tell a story means there are opportunities that were not available to journalists a short while ago.
